Rafael Kalamat Actor | Director | Producer
Rafael Kalamat is a producer, writer, director and actor. Telling stories and being involved in theatre, film and television for over 25 years has given him the experience and contacts to take him on a path to promote and empower those who want to pursue a life as media missionaries: A calling to grow the Kingdom of God trough media.
Rafael has been slowly growing into his purpose that brought him to becoming a pubic speaker at church events, festivals, charity dinners, panels and conferences. His partnership with Dr. Rev. Byron Spradlin at Artists in Christian Testimony International lead him to be co-founder of the Canadian International Faith & Family Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, a not-for-profit charity division of A.C.T. Canada. As an active member of CMPA (Canadian Media Producer’s Association) and performer with ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Radio, Film and Television Artists) he welcomes the challenges of bridging the gap of secular and non-secular arts.
Though he has many independent credits to his name, Rafael’s career hit new heights in 2016 with the production of the film Adams Testament, in which he co-produced/wrote/directed. The movie was nominated at last years ICFF in three catagories and is slated for release late 2018.
He also spent a few years in talk radio. That format lent itself well to producing and co-hosting a four part television round table talk show in 2015 called In The Room where actors, producers discussed life on and off screen. 2018-19 looks like a promising year as the show will be produced as a ten part series featuring Christian creatives.
Rafael was raised in the multi-cultural english and french speaking city of Montreal, Canada. At the age of 9, he was auditioning for stage and film and later attended Thomas D’arcy McGee Centre for the Fine and Performing Arts where he studied film and theatre for 5 years and continued post studies at Dawson College in Film & Communications. Working in every capacity possible, as an extra and stand-in to stunt driving and acting, his enthusiasm has given him a well rounded appreciation and understanding of the film industry.
Rafael’s latest projects, include the development of Cifflix as part of CIFF (Canadian International Film Festival). Cifflix, the sister-brand of the festival and the sales & distribution arm that empowers filmmakers to get their films seen not only at the festival but connecting them to industry distributors, broadcasters, theatres and platforms around the world. This came to fruition after years of realizing how faith films never usually see the light of day and the need to have these stories of family, faith and redemption seen was divine intervention at its best. Also in development and slated to shoot late 2018 is the untitled Christmas Movie that he wrote with long time co-filmaker and business partner Jason Barbeck.
When he’s not producing, writing, directing or travelling to conferences and festivals, Rafael is sharing the message of the Gospel to the homeless. He lives in Toronto with his wife Joanna and son Adam.
